Windows reports that it can see 3.5GB of my 4GB installed RAM so I don't appear to have wasted all my money!

I never said you couldnt see it, it just cant make use of more than 2GB at a time, its a draw back to the windows 32 bit structure, sorry Sad.

Windows can't, but the rest gets allocated to other things.

Such as? Toasted muffins?

Other layers of the OCI seven-layer model.

Lol yes I remember. I remember so well in fact that I know the 7 layer model has nothing to do with OS resources or how RAM is allocated to applications, its to do with networking :p.

Even then its all about bottlenecks hudders, more RAM can only speed up your network processing so far. In fact that reminds me of this crazy card: http://www.killernic.com/products/nic.aspx

Some people have too much money.

Hello. I am the topic necromancer.

So I finally got around to buying Bioshock, (£14 - bargain), and I'm loving it so much I would like to marry it and have its babies. The atmosphere is awesome and the mechanics are great.

Two problems though. One minor, one quite major:

  • Scrolling the mousewheel to change weapon doesn't work. It changes weapon, sure, but it also makes me look at the ceiling or at the floor at the same time. Most annoying, but easily rectifiable by re-mapping mouse4 and mouse5 to change weapon instead.
  • It doesn't work. *cries* Bioshock and my graphics card just don't get on. Every now and then during a graphics-heavy scene, (pretty much every Big Daddy fight), everything locks up and these funny red squiggles appear on the screen. I will post a photo of what it looks like later but I think I've found the problem on the Interwebs; it's basically down to insufficient cooling on the GPU. Underclocking the memory bus on the card seems to have worked, (as it's no longer working so hard), but only time will tell whether these problems are gone for good.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty playable now I've patched both the game and the graphics drivers but it seems like everytime there's a firefight, the GPU craps its pants. Maybe it was down to how warm it was last night, (it was pretty damn hot in my study), but that really shouldn't make so much of a difference.

TBH, underclocking the memory speed hasn't made a difference to performance, (haven't noticed a drop), other than to, (hopefully), prevent the thing locking up on me.

This is why games consoles are so popular. A lot less hassle.

Bioshock was great. The graphics, atmosphere, narrative/story. The only major downer for me was the ending. I wish they had put as much effort into that as they had in.. well.. anything.

You just know that arguement's not going to hold water in the next generation.

Maybe not, but I'm not bothered about that. Next gen is a while off.

That wasn't an arguement. I agree with you. It's just a statement.

OK, so this is what it looks like when it goes tits-up:

Screen freezes. COMPUTER freezes. The one time I actually managed to get back to Windows rather than have to reset the machine, I was stuck in 4bit-colour hell with a shitty 640x480 resolution - even after I reset the machine several times! If you've ever tried to function in that crippled state, you'll appreciate how long it took to uninstall / reinstall the graphics drivers and pull myself back from the brink!

However, a few extra fans later, it's all fixed now, so panic over. Grin

For some reason the detail they've put into the weapon upgrades fills me with glee. I love seeing the extra ammo belt on the revolver now that it's been upgraded for a larger clip. I carry it around just to look at it.  Cheesy

phew! Glad you got the problem sorted. It's a good game and should be enjoyed problem-free.

I also loved the weapon upgrades! Unfortunately I did not get them all  Sad  I came close-ish though!

I also loved the hacking mini-game  Cheesy
