FFS thanks for turning my books thread into a discussion about rocks! One of my least favourite subjects at school! Why don't you start a "We Love Rocks" thread.

Anyway...

Yeah A Short History to Nearly Everything was a good read Smiley. I also love the discworld books, finished "Going Postal" a few weeks ago and i'm looking forward to "Making Money". Have you read any of Tom Holts books Hudders?

I also recommend any books by Robin Hobb and Tad Williams. Oh and Ian Irvine, but his stuff wont a appeal to most people and can be a a bit samey.

Currently reading Sourcery. Another book about the wizards. They're awesome.

Oh, and the Wit'ch series from James Clemens. Ironbat should know about that one. I found them pretty awesome Smiley

I don't like the first few Discworld books, (The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites and Sourcery). I do like Mort though.

Not into the wizards stuff, are you then? Smiley

I love the Luggage though, no way you can put me off from that Cheesy
After Death, my favourite character in the series.

Mort's awesome. Another good book that is semi discworld is Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It makes fun of The Omen and various 'end of world and apocalypse' stuff. Including a total mockery of the four horsemen, who get accompanied by bikers. Seriously. Good stuff Cheesy

Good Omens is a fantastic book.

I like the wizards, I just hate Rincewind for some reason.

The early books feel a little flat compared to the later ones which are so rich with content. Wyrd Sisters is good but again, it feels a little bit flat. I'm also not sure how much I like the rest of the witches series. Carpe Jugulum is good though and I suppose that falls into the generals witches category.

My favourites are the Ankh Morpork ones. Specifically the ones involving Vimes. My favourite book is probably Night Watch.

My favourite character is Lord Vetinari. I especially like him in Jingo.

True, but the old ones do have their charm. They were used to build up the world that the later books benefitted from. Some books are better than others, but that's the case in all large running series that exist. Still, Discworld has done a fantastic run over the years, with a general level that stays high enough for the books to be enjoyable. Not a lot of series can manage that.

Hope good ol' Terry's doing well though... I take it you (along with the rest of the world) heard of his illness?

Yes.

He had a stroke and now it appears he is suffering from a relatively debilitating form of alzheimers. He reckons he's only got two books left in him. I wonder whether he'll use the certainty of his demise to concoct a proper ending for the Discworld series?

Hmm.. no clue.. I don't think the discworld series needs to be concluded. You'd have to blow the entire world up for that, which I doubt he'd do.

Just make some nice books with good events and make sure NOBODY ever touches Discworld again. The only person who could be able to do it would be Neil Gaiman, but even him I wouldn't trust with Discworld.

The final book could be a sort of series flashback where shitloads of old characters come back and combine their forces to do something. It'll be grand, that much is sure. Even though he's got alzheimer's, he'll put in his best effort to make something out of his last books and make sure they're as good as the rest.

We'll see, I guess. Knowing Pratchett, it'll be something we'll all enjoy.
