Is it me or is the forum suffering from thread bloat a bit? This is where just one or two threads get all the posts and hopelessly bloat.

Where are all the new posts?

REVOL do something wacky/arty and intresting! Sad

This thread is now the target for bloat.

Have at ye!

But, seriously, it's because nobody ever posts anything interesting anymore; nobody really creates new threads. If you look at the Stats Page you can see how top-heavy the "top topics starters" graph is.

I think this is some of the problem.

Average registrations per day:    0.32
Average posts per day:    48.68

We don't appeal enough to new users, I think.

Well..... this isn't your run-of-the-mill forum anyway.. I'm guessing you have to be alittle bit bonkers to come back here.

It says more about the current users me thinks

To be honest, I think the crowd we've got here at the moment is good enough, we all know eachother by now, and it's just right with the amount of people posting these days.

The issue here isn't the number of new users, it's the way current users seem to be afraid to create new topics. If you have a new thing to talk about, you should create a new thread; if we continue to add our random thoughts to the same thread, eventually it ends up being about nothing and it's a daunting task to catch up with if you haven't been following it from the very beginning, (sometimes it's a daunting task even if you have been).

I'd like to see more people actually starting topics rather than just tacking on to existing ones. It doesn't take much to do and it would be far more interesting in the long run. I'd much rather see eight topics all with one new post each than one topic with eight new posts.

Nodde and I had a conversation the other day which subscribes to your point of view honey.
People here enjoy the banter, we can sometimes get a bit mean but we all know there's no real malicious intent (or at least I hope there isn't). We even enjoy I-punks unconventional humour.

But more new posts? Dunno if that'll work Hudders, especially how every topic goes off-topic anyway. We're just more random than the average group of forum users..

It's quite annoying, It's very hard to remember which thread is the one you're looking for, and if you want to find something particulair, you better make sure you've got an hour or two to browse the forum.

But I have to admit, noddegamra is wonderful, and the always going off-topic threads just add to it. it's funny.

And Hudders, you know you're risking people starting a new thread for every word they'd want to answer you with Tongue

Fuck them. What do I care? Tongue

I'm not proposing that threads are policed to make sure everyone "stays on topic", but there gets to a point in a topic where you've got to think that starting a new thread would be a good idea. I'm not even opposed to multiple threads on the same topic, if the original thread was done with several months ago.

I guess there is moderation that could try and solve this..

"Stay on Topic" reminders
Splitting topics at the point they go "off topic"
Locking topics that go to a mushy blur of nothingness

However, this sort of "policing" and "trimming" could be a little annoying. It would be much better if people could manage their posts a little better. If you do start going a little "off topic", why not start a new one and just link to it?

Worst.idea.ever. Next you'll be removing our custom avatars and replacing them with pre-approved Noddegamra designs, limiting our post count to 10 per day and no use of emotion in our posts.
