Tablet to draw, mouse to tweak and fuck about with things that aren't quite in the right place. Ahh, the beauty of vectors!

I'm trying to find some decent tutorials that actually make some sense but as yet I can't find anything that doesn't charge money or doesn't rely on a previous knowledge of previous illustrator versions. All very annoying.

It takes some getting used to.
Click somewhere to set the start point.
Then you can keep on clicking about, but that'll only give you straight lines between the points you've set.
The beauty is in the curvature you can give the points, by clicking and then dragging your mouse.
You'll probably know what I'm talking about.
The curve will affect the line you've just created and also the one after,
but if you'd like the curve to stop at the point you've created,
simply click the point again after you've set the curve.

I'm hoping that made sense.

Yeah I understand what you're talking about. I just find it very difficult as it's not anything like I've used before.

I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually. But it may take some time.

It doesn't work very well. You scan in the drawing and it doesn't look the same as on paper - all those nice black lines you thought you had turn out to be varied shades of grey. Increasing contrast and decreasing brightness helps a little bit, but at the end of the day the only thing that works well is going over the lines on the computer on another layer and stripping out the original drawing.

It works, but it takes too long to be practical.

Anyway. I've experimented with Paint Shop Pro and with Adobe Illustrator but I think I've become a GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) convert. It's just much faster and much more stable when you're drawing freehand with a tablet. It's also got pressure sensitivity built in AND it's 100% totally free.

http://www.gimp.org/ if you're interested.

I tried GIMP v1 and thought it was a load of shit but v2 is much much much nicer and more user friendly. I'm dead impressed.
