The other day Cubbyfunsta was talking to me about teamspeak/ventrillo servers. I had not looked into it before, but the rental is infact really cheap for what we need.

Renting a Teamspeak server can cost me/us £3 per month for 8-10 player "slots", with 24 hour "uptime". This has obvious advantages of being able to log on whenever, which is really handy for when Joran cant be online, yet people still wish to do an instance.

The downside to this is obviously TeamSpeak is a bit of a project of Joran's. The current method has a bit of "character". I don't really want to take that away from him. So IronBat, I'd really love to hear what you have to say on this. If your ok with having a rented server, would you still like to administrate it? (top level). You do a fantastic job for us so far.

I'd also like to know what others think about this. Would people be willing to contribute towards this? (payment for rental can be done using paypal).

I think it would be good to have 2 or 3 channels for instances (5 slots) and a sociable channel (for guildies just to log on and chat when instances arent running).

What do you all think?

Nodde,

If you can find someone with an old computer and some bandwith left over, maybe it would be funnier to set it up in-house?

I've been experimenting with a SIP server myself, only that needs to run under Linux and does not have the conference ability setup like teamspek, but you could set up a dedicated machine on a router with ventrillo server installed (and maybe even bung on an apache server so you can have a guild homesite).

You would access the whole lot through a single IP and all it needs is correct port forwarding in the router.

IronBat has a server setup like that, but feels uncomfortable leaving it on for long periods of time, or when he leaves the house. Overheating (even with adequate cooling) can always be a concern when it's in your own house. Worries such as it catching fire. There is also the aspect of electricity bills.

More uptime would be great, which is why we need to discuss the available options Smiley

It would be a waste of money.

I agree Baele.

It would be better to deposit your money in the TNMFRF (Tria's New Microphone Fund Raising Foundation) since i still can't get mine to work with teamspeak.

On the other hand, it does work with Ventrilo... so what gives?
Maybe we should rent a ventrilo server... Smiley

Im with tria, vent is sooooo much nicer to use(sorry ironbat Grin)

Yep Lanzaned that is basicly our current setup, linux box running TS server with router using dynamic IP/DNS lookup and port forwarding.

Hummm well I rather like running the server but it no biggy, I appriciate that people would like to use it all the time. Having said that we still dont have a large uptake.

Basicly im not in a position where I can leave it on all the time, if you want that then we will have to look to renting or something.

I have looked into getting Vent working on my linux box, while its not straight forward I think I can get it working Smiley.

So its up to you guys if you want a 24 hour service, if you do we will have to pay.

If you really want 24 hour service, you can leave the server at my house.

I really don't care about the minimal cost it will add to my electricity bill and I am confident it wont burn my house down.

@ Tria - It might be a setting somewhere. I had that problem too, I will look to help you resolve it when we are next online at the same time. Alternatively, do you live in the UK? I could probs send you a new mic/headset?

@ Baele - Thankyou for your kind offer. Lanzaned has also offered a similar service (although with the "server" being in another country there might be a tad more lag?). It would be nice to work something out Smiley

I love "Jorans Server", and whilst we dont have a huge demand for vocal communication at the moment, I think with a more reliable service people may be more inclined to use it. Also, as the guild seems to be growing (and doing more higher level instances) I think it is something important as part of our team evolving.

Might be the same as Joran's random problem. He has to open Audacity, close it again, and then run TS in order for his microphone to work. It's very odd!

On the contrary. The Dutch have far better broadband coverage and speeds than the UK. I imagine you'd get less lag from that.

I was going to set up a redundant old box anyway, so I'll prolly be able to host some stuff, just have to put it in my DMZ and we'll be ready and ripping to go. Though I have to check out Ventrillo first.. TS was quite easy to setup hope Vent will be as well....

Ventrillo is a bitch on linux, I suggest you run it on a windows box or use WINE.
