Neither was Planet of the Apes really, considering the quality of the original, (go back and watch it sometime; yes it has its classic moments, but on the whole it hasn't really held up astonishingly well over time). That said, the film was a bit rubbish and could have been a lot better. War of the Worlds wasn’t that bad.
